The princely church of “The Assumption of the Virgin” in the commune of Hălmagiu was built by the family of the Romanian Prince Moga in 1396. The church is set against a highly picturesque mountainous background. In old Romanian, the name of the commune and of the church, “Hălmagiu”, signified a hill. In this commune that is highly celebrated for its folklore ceremonies the church has been an important cultural centre, disseminating many religious books in Slavonic all through the 15th century. Beautiful inside paintings in the Byzantine style, dating from the 13th to the 18th centuries, have been preserved.
